Husky unveils new closure mold platform for cap makers: HyCAP 4.0

Husky Technologies has introduced a new injection mold platform for ultra-lightweight bottle cap production that complies with tethered-cap requirements.

Mold and closure maker Husky Technologies has announced a new mold platform for beverage cap/closure production, HyCAP 4.0. The platform specifically targets the shift to "tethered closure" formats; single-use plastics regulations in the EU, and increasingly in other markets, require bottle caps to remain attached to the bottle body.

Polymer bushings that reduce steel-on-steel contact

A standout feature of the platform is polymer bushings that reduce steel-on-steel contact in the mold's moving parts. According to Husky, this extends mold life and reduces wear and maintenance frequency, ultimately lowering unplanned downtime and spare-parts cost.

Ultra-lightweight, tight tolerance

HyCAP 4.0 targets thinner-walled, lighter cap production through optimized mold geometry and tight tolerance control — meaning less raw material for the same recipe, and lower material cost per part. Both tethered and non-tethered cap formats can be produced on the same platform, meaning a manufacturer can switch formats as regulations change without a major investment.

What does this mean for a molder?

For molders running, or considering entering, a cap/closure line, the main takeaway is that lightweighting is no longer achieved by recipe changes alone, but also through mold design and tolerance control. In thin-walled parts that require high-speed filling like these, getting the speed/pressure changeover and holding setup right is as decisive as the mold itself. Design details that extend mold maintenance intervals (bushings, surface coatings) are one of the most common causes of unplanned downtime in high-volume, multi-cavity molds.
