Engel delivers duo 12000, "the world's largest" injection molding machine
Engel's two-platen duo 12000 US can carry molds weighing up to 170 tons with 110,000 kN of clamping force; targets include automotive battery enclosures and infrastructure parts like water tanks.
Austrian machine builder Engel has delivered the duo 12000 US, the largest injection molding machine it has ever produced, to a customer. The two-platen machine has a clamping force of 110,000 kN (roughly 11,000 tons); it is 24 meters long, 8.4 meters tall and weighs 551 tons. The machine can carry molds weighing up to 170 tons and was designed for parts with a projected area larger than 2.5 m²; with its dual injection units the shot volume can reach up to 65,000 cm³.
Target applications include battery enclosures, underbody panels and hybrid interior door structures in automotive, and water tanks, containment boxes and shipping containers in infrastructure. Engel states that producing single parts at this scale reduces assembly steps, saving on material and logistics costs.
On a machine of this scale, the clamping force choice is made based on projected area and injection pressure — you can apply the same logic at a smaller scale to your own part using the method in our clamping force calculation article.
